Welcome to my blog. Well, welcome to my blog/portfolio/online-resume/creative outlet. As an SEO fanatic (and avid writer), I wanted to take on the task of cultivating my own online space - a place where I can post my achievements, skill-set, and thoughts on the latest SEO trends.
Benefits of Having an Online Portfolio
There is are a plethora of benefits to creating your online portfolio - it's a great place to showcase your work history, specialized skills (like writing, drawing, or design) and gives your resume more weight. As the world dives deeper and deeper into the digital space, the more likely it'll become for companies to require online portfolios during the application process (I wouldn't be surprised if you're reading this blog just for that reason!). Besides fulfilling an application requirement, what else can a portfolio garner you?
It Sets You Apart from the Competition
Probably the biggest (and most obvious) benefit of creating a portfolio is that it sets you apart from other professionals in your industry. Really want to land that dream job? You're going to have to make yourself stand out from all the other highly qualified applicants. A portfolio can give you the upper hand you've been looking for.
You can make your portfolio anything you want it to be to make it uniquely you. It's a great chance to put a face to a name, show the recruiter your personality, and can even give you topics to talk about during an interview.
You Can Bring in Additional Revenue
One thing that stopped me from creating an online portfolio up until this point was the fact that I'm happy where I'm at currently. But, a smart marketer knows that it's always good to continually improve and put yourself out there for new opportunities.
A portfolio can be a great opportunity for individuals that are happy where they're at but want to bring in a little extra cash each month. Showing off your skill set can catch the eyes of companies looking for temporary contract work that you can do on the side.
It's a Great Way to Improve (or Learn) a Skill Set
If you're in the digital marketing world like I am, you know better than anyone how important it is to have a killer site with useful content. It's a skill almost anyone should learn - whether you're a business owner, freelancer, or just someone looking to spruce up their resume. Taking the time to make your website (even if you use something user-friendly like Wix or Weebly) will sharpen your writing abilities, organizational skills, and eye for design. Additionally, it just may make you a more tech-savvy person, which is always a plus in my book!
It's Fun!
You have to admit that the idea of making a website sounds a little fun right? Have your portfolio be a creative outlet that you work on in your free time. When creating a portfolio you get to write about the subject you know best: you! Your portfolio will probably be one of the best times to do a little bragging and ego-boosting.
If you're looking for a reason to create a portfolio - you probably (most definitely) need one. In today's digital world, it's an easy way to make your first impression a good one. It's always a good idea to continually improve and work on yourself, and creating a portfolio can allow you to assess your work history and skill set a little deeper.
